Modifiers allow items to have different adjustments. For example, a base item like Coffee can have modifications like Flavors (Vanilla, Mocha, or Caramel) or Cup Size (Small, Medium, or Large). This guide will explain how to make Modifiers and Modifier Groups.

Quick Overview
We can break down Modifiers into Modifiers and Modifier Groups. Modifier Groups are collections of similar Modifiers.
Modifiers on the Register
Modifiers on the Ordering Screen
This is an example of an item with a single selection and required modifier. The item cannot be added to the cart without choosing the cup size.
This is an example of an item with an unlimited selection and the modifier is not required. This item can be added to the cart without making a modifier selection.
Modifiers on the Kiosk
This is an example of an item with both required and not required modifiers. This item can be added to the cart without making a modifier selection.
In this example, one of the Modifier Groups is Bun (Required) and its modifiers are Plain, Wheat, & Gluten Free. The second Modifier Group is Additional Toppings (Not required) and its modifiers are Onion, Lettuce, Tomato, Cheese, and Bacon.

Creating a Modifier Group
1. The Modifier Group is the container for modifiers. To create a Modifier Group, navigate to Manager then POS Manager > Menu Manager.
2. To create a new Modifier Group, click the Create button in the top right and chose Modifier Group. Modifier Groups require the following details:
- (Required) Name - The name of the Modifier Group as it appears in Manager and on the register.
-
(Required) Rules - Selection Rules control if the selection is required and how many selections are available
- Single selection: only one modifier can be selected (for example, cup size)
- Unlimited selection: there is no limit to the number of modifiers that can be chosen (for example, burger toppings)
- Limited selection: you want to limit the number of modifiers (for example, a 2-topping pizza will have a limit of 2 modifiers)
-
(Required) Modifier Options - What Modifiers are attached to this Modifier Group
- Required: the item cannot be added to the cart without selecting a modifier (for example, cup size)
- Not required: modifiers are not required for the item to be added to the cart (for example, burger toppings)
3. Set the Selection Options for the Modifier Group.
Selection Options can limit the selection amount.
- Single selection: you only want the customer to select 1 modifier (for example, cup size)
- Unlimited selection: the customer may select as many modifiers as they want (for example, burger toppings)
- Limited selection: the customer may only choose as many modifiers as you allow them to (for example, two-topping pizza)
Selection required adjusts whether the modifier must be selected to continue the order.
- Selection required: Customer must select it to continue the order (for example, cup size)
- Selection not required: It is optional for the customer to choose a modifier (for example, pizza toppings)
4. Add the Modifiers to the Modifier Group. If the Modifier already exists, it will appear as you type the name (Example on the left) but if it does not exist, then you can create it right in the search bar (Example on the right).
5. When adding a Modifier to a Modifier Group a prompt will ask for the following:
- (Required) Name - Name of the Modifier as it will appear in Manager and on the register as well as the kiosk.
- (Required) Price - Any additional price for the modifier (This price can be zero)
-
(Required) Quantity - How many base units this modifier uses (For more information on Inventory click here) MUST use whole numbers (no decimals) for this quantity
- If you adjust the quantity to a number greater than 1, it will multiply the price by that quantity
- Example: Cheese is priced at $1.00 and you mark the quantity as 2, it will charge the customer $2.00
- If you adjust the quantity to a number greater than 1, it will multiply the price by that quantity
Repeat this process for all Modifiers for this Modifier Group. You can also create the Modifiers and bulk-add them to the Modifier Group at a later time.
Creating Modifiers
1. To create a Modifier, navigate to Manager then POS Manager > Menu Manager.
2. Click the Create button in the top right and chose Modifier. Modifiers require the following details:
- (Required) Name - How the Modifier will appear on the register.
- (Required) Price - If there is a price connected to this Modifier. Note: The price can be $0 if you do not want to charge for the Modifier.
- (Optional) Inventory Tracking - If you are using inventory tracking you can add a stock item to this modifier. More information is in the BOH configuration guide.
3. To bulk add Modifiers, go to the Modifiers tab and check all Modifiers you want to add to the Modifier Group. Then, in the search bar, select the Modifier Group you want to add them to and hit Save.
Ordering Modifiers on the Terminal Screen
You may want to set up your modifiers to display in a specific, logical order on the register screen. For example, Small, Medium, Large instead of Large, Small, Medium.
In order to control the order of the modifiers follow these steps:
1. Add the Modifier to the Modifier Group you want to display first on the register screen.
2. Click Save.
3. Go back into the Modifier Group and add the next item in the correct order and hit Save.
4. Add the remaining Modifiers in the order you want them to appear on the register by adding the Modifier and clicking Save each time.
5. Ensure that you have attached the Modifier Group to the designated Menu Item.
Important Notes on Modifiers
Building Menus for Premium (with modifiers) and Concessions (without modifiers)
If you're creating menus for both premium areas and concessions, and you're using the same menu items, remember that you can't selectively apply modifiers to one menu and not the other. Modifiers are tied to the menu item itself.
For instance, premium menus might include beer type modifiers because they have a dedicated server delivering the beer, whereas concessions prefer not to use modifiers to keep the line moving smoothly. They simply remember the beer type and hand it to the customer. In such cases, it's best to create two separate menu items: one for premium and one for concessions. This allows modifiers to be applied to the premium item while keeping the concessions item modifier-free.
Using Modifiers with Inventory
If you are using the inventory module, typically, we recommend not using modifiers that are associated with a recipe due to complicating your standsheets. Please speak to your Training Manager if this is something you desire to do and they will work with you to present the best options.
What if I want to add a modifier called "No onions" or another "No" option?
If you are using our inventory system, we recommend that you do not include modifiers that are to exclude items. Instead, use "Special Instructions" to add a note to the menu item.
